Making of “Oppfinner Olaf” – intro page

Here comes the full work-in-progress of the intro page for a book idea I’m working on! I hope this post will give some insight into how I work and develop my illustrations, and I that you readers out there will find it enjoyable.

As always, the first step begins in my sketchbook with some really rough doodles and thumbnail sketches that probably I’m the only one fully who understands. I really liked the first sketch of the house and decided to develop it further in photoshop.

The first sketch is doodled in two point perspective. (In reality, it was done in three point – but the last vanishing point is so far away that the effect is only subtle.)

The final composition is not working so well and some experimenting is needed to find the best one.

Lineart completed!

Then some shading samples…

..And finally the fun part can begin!

Finished! Click to view the full version. πŸ™‚

  1. Hi Sandra! I know your artworks from GFX (my nickname is Mizia btw.), I’m glad that I discovered your blog.
Your drawing skills are really impressing! And the mood you’ve created with lights and colors – simply amazing! This post was really interesting and also helpful with understanding of your work process, so thanks for sharing! πŸ™‚

  2. Your blog is fantastic, I love the way you show all the steps in the process of creating it. Your talent is great. I found your blog and website when I saw your posting on a forum regarding how to calculate freelance rates. I also think that subject should be an open discussion and don’t understand why some people try to keep it secret. I suspect that they choose their rates at random, ask for as much as they think they can, without any real rate scale calculation to back up their prices.

Anyway, I’ve bookmarked your website and blog and will enjoy coming back again and again to see how your art is progressing.

    I also have a wordpress blog: galefaney.wordpress.com

Cheers from Prince Edward Island, Canada,

    1. Hi Gale! Thanks for visiting my blog I’m happy to hear you’ve bookmarked it! I’ll check out your blog too. πŸ˜‰
Yeah pricing is really tricky… I hope we can be more open about this topic and not be afraid of asking each other questions. The first few years in this business is really tough and pretty random that’s for sure. πŸ˜€
(I’m waiting curiously to see if something will happen to that art&business forum… )
